Intervention: Gina

Gina's heroin abuse was largely due to the negative treatment she received from her mother. This was a good example of psychological projection where her mother projected her negative feelings about her hard life onto her daughter through beatings. Gina used heroin as an escape from reality so she no longer had to feel the pain. It was interesting to see that after such a short, yet emotional conversation in which her mother admitted her wrongs and apologized, Gina was willing to accept treatment for her problems. It seems like her mother never did actively try to go out and get Gina the help that she needed. Rather, she just kept blaming Gina over and over again through negative reinforcement. This only furthered the problem and worsened their relationship. So, when she realized that her mother really did wish the best for her, she accepted without hesitation. Overall, this intervention highlighted the impact that "showing love" and "positive reinforcement" can have on an a troubled person rather than playing the blame game.

  1. I agree. After the short conversation between Gina and her mother, Gina was able to accept treatment. I think that Gina longed for her mother's love so desperately that when the opportunity came to have a loving relationship she has always wanted, she took it. I feel that Gina wanted to get better but her lack of support from her mother held her back from making the right decision to benefit herself.

  2. I completely agree. I think that what you said about the mother showing signs of psychological projection are really true. She had felt unloved by her mother and she had also felt unloved by her husband. She wanted people to want her, and she subconsciously knew that she was acting desperate and she hated it about herself. I think that desperation she projected onto her own daughter, Gina. She thought Gina was desperate as a little girl and that was why she got raped, that she somehow caused herself to be raped. I think that the mother was really sad and did not know how to handle her anger and negative view of herself.
