School Shootings...Should There Be Guns In Classrooms?
School Shootings are one of the worse tragedies that can happen to a community. A place where kids go to learn and educate themselves, can't be considered safe from outside danger is heartbreaking. There were 15 school shootings in the year 2015, with a total of 19 deaths and many injuries. It has been debated for years if teachers should be allowed to keep firearms in the classroom, and I think it is a silly idea. I understand why there are people who believe this should be allowed, but I strongly disagree. According to one source there were 100,000 public schools in the US in 2008. That does not include all private schools as well. The odds of these schools to be shot up are very, very, very low. A gun in the classroom with 100,00 public schools will most likely lead to more problems then good. Teachers are humans, and humans get upset and make decisions based on emotion, and do not always think. I would almost feel less safe in a classroom with a gun, because you never know when that gun may be used. You just don't know when a teacher or kid could snap and get a hold of that gun. What do you think they should do?

I completely agree with what you are saying. They should definitely not be allowed to put guns in classrooms because it is even more dangerous. Putting a firearm so close to people who could take advantage of it is far too dangerous and risky. Even small accidents with a gun can lead to tragedy. I also agree that with low chances of school shootings happening at a school, putting a gun in the classroom would be overkill. I think that teachers and students should be equipped and taught to defend themselves in these situations, but once again guns would be too dangerous.
ReplyDeleteI can see where the logic behind this comes from because in the heads of many they are thinking "how do we stop a person with a gun? Another person with a gun." I agree with you that guns in the classroom would only cause more danger than safety. I think schools should get bodyguards and those bodyguard should be armed with a taser or something along those lines. But then again what would a taser do compared to gun or perhaps even the guards could abuse their power. This matter is too complicated.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jose, having extra guns is not a good way to counteract the guns that already are in use and could pose danger. If someone does this, guns will simply accumulate, and more people may misuse them. While it would be better for people to simply not have guns, this is unlikely to happen in the near future. So for now, I think that schools should enact other measures to protect against intruders, like having a good security system to detect dangerous people.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you 100%. There is no reason for teachers to be able to have that extensive power over students, especially when full blown psychopaths usually appear after the teenage years - doesn't that make the teachers more dangerous than the students? Further more, it would make students more scared to go to school, and increase the drop-out rate.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you. Even though the idea of having guns in classrooms is to keep people safe, I think this is very risky because if a gun gets into the wrong person's hands, it could escalate and end very badly.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with your point here. While having a method of self-defense in the classroom can be helpful, I feel that in order to increase levels of safety, there should be an increased number of security guards as opposed to teachers with firearms, who, as you stated, can make mistakes due to heightened emotions.
ReplyDeleteSchool shooting and any shootings are awful. No person should have to experience this type of trauma. But at the same time, adding fire to fire does not help the situation. Promoting guns would increase the gun industry to the point that everyone in the world could have a gun. And then we have to think about whose hands these weapons will end up in? The safest thing we can do it practice Code Red drills and practice in organized manners to prevent more deaths.
